Successful for generations!

Tradition & innovation since 1865

Since its founding in 1865, the Eckelmann group of companies has been based in the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg and has been closely linked to the Hanseatic-commercial roots of the Elbe metropolis. The traditional company is now managed in the 5th generation.

Robert M. Eckelmann (geb. 1950)

Under his leadership, the Ewerführererei expanded into an efficient logistics company in the port of Hamburg and the industrial services area developed into another focus in the Eckelmann Group's service portfolio.

Kurt Eckelmann (1916-1994)

Kurt Eckelmann opted for a land-based expansion course and set himself the goal of successfully setting up a handling facility for containers. In addition, the company was expanded to include tank cleaning and tanker shipping, which gave it the basis for the waste disposal and recycling business.

Carl Robert Eckelmann (1880-1948)

When Carl Robert and Caesar Eckelmann took over the Ewerführererei in 1902, they were constantly innovating. For example, the pointed chute was replaced by the box chute. In 1948 the barge fleet finally comprised a tonnage of 5500 tons as well as four tugs and a barge.

Cordt Eckelmann (1812-1880)

In 1865 the company founder Cordt Eckelmann laid the foundation stone for what would later become the family business Carl Robert Eckelmann by building his own wooden barge. Over the generations, the Hamburg Ewerführererei has become a wide range of service companies.

150 years of Eckelmann - 150 years of port, logistics, environment

The foundation stone for the family business, now run by the sixth generation, was laid in 1865 by the bargeman Cordt Eckelmann. As both shipowner and charterer, he built up a customer base with just a few barges, which his son Carl Johann Lorenz Eckelmann continuously expanded. After 1900, the third generation under Carl Robert and Cäsar Eckelmann expanded the company to include landside goods transport. After the Second World War, the fourth generation under Curt Eckelmann added tank cleaning of ships and tank wagons to the range of services in addition to tanker shipping. With oil recycling, the company made a name for itself as the first specialised maritime waste disposal and recycling company in Hamburg. This was complemented by pioneering innovations in barge construction and harbour handling. In the mid-1970s, Robert M. Eckelmann deepened and expanded the environmental protection division in the fifth generation. His visions gave new impetus to the diversification of the product range and placed ‘Carl Robert Eckelmann GmbH’ on an economically consolidated foundation.
