eckelmann zukunft vorm bug

150 years of Eckelmann – 150 years of ports, logistics and the environment

The foundation stone for the family business, now run by the sixth generation, was laid down by the bargeman Cordt Eckelmann in 1865. As both a ship-owner and freighter, he built up a customer base with only a few barges which his son Carl Johann Lorenz Eckelmann continued to expand. After 1900 the third generation under Carl Robert and Caesar Eckelmann extended the company to include land-based freight transport. After the Second World War, the fourth generation of the family under Curt Eckelmann began cleaning tanks belonging to ships and tank wagons in addition to tank transport. With the start of oil exploitation, the company became known as the primary maritime waste disposal and recycling company in Hamburg. Added to this, pioneering innovations in the field of shaft-building and port handling have continued to this day. In the mid-1970s, Robert M. Eckelmann intensified and expanded the environmental protection division in the fifth generation. His visions gave new impetus to the diversification of the range of services and placed Carl Robert Eckelmann GmbH on an economically sound footing. Innovation and versatility are today the hallmark of Carl Robert Eckelmann GmbH for logistics, cleaning, disposal and repair – but the barge, the nucleus, is still an integral part of the family business even today.
